Opening

2. Community Builder: What is a community and what can we add?

• Common purpose, shared experiences, empathy, connection, and communication, a role model to the student body, fun and joy, a place people want to be, opportunities for engagement 
• Disparity or injustice, not able to have a voice, or don’t know how to use your voice, negativity, poor communication can lead to families not feeling included

• Updates from last meeting 5 takeaways 

1. Encouraging enrollment of current fifth-grade families, including new outreach to feeder schools and the local Bayview community 
2. Parent and family communication and involvement: What are the most effective ways to reach out and get families’ input: texts, emails, calls, or social media? 
3. How do parents motivate and support students during distance learning? 
4. How best to support our teachers and staff, to show our appreciation? 
5. Checking in on social-emotional health during distance learning

2. Enrollment event(s) in January: Offer Zoom meet-ups for families from feeder schools
3. Enrollment deadline is February 5, 2021

Meeting Notes

• Blizzard Bash: confirmed collaboration with the warriors (coach Kurt) 
• Communication made to principals at elementary schools 
• Update on Parent Survey: preference for group email over text, Perhaps using “GroupsIO” easier than yahoo or google 
• Wednesday Parent Support Group: Keshya and Rashida will be facilitating, purpose: to share experiences, empathy, connect with other parents, and how to support social-emotional learning 
• Idea from Breakfast with Brown for teacher appreciation to send letters and videos from families, love letters for teachers in February, perhaps preparing prepackaged envelopes with supplies (currently staff is printing emails to mail out to teachers over holidays showing appreciation) 
• Student Appreciation
  • Staff created 4 printed WBWMS postcards that were filled out to send to each student over the holidays 
  • Charleston gave shout out to teachers and staff that when requests and needs arise the staff is responding immediately to provide support to motivate and inspire the students. 
• Fundraising
  • Beacon has funds that need to be spent… 
  • Peer mentors
  • Hands-on experience: how to once a month (to allow work with hands, w/ peers connection point)
  • Projects tie to the educational component 
  • Student activities to be tied to parent night (ideas: Zumba, salsa lessons, cooking, Shelia E 🙂
  • Perhaps live Facebook or Instagram 
  • Brad volunteered to teach a cooking class! 
  • See’s Candy Fundraiser raised $800!!! 
• Other support I think meant for students or achieve 60% plus attendance: 
  • 10 x 100 gift cards from families from care team
  • Parent liaison dropping off food 
• Idea: PTO sponsor teacher a year $250
