Testimonials

Hear from our Families

and their experience at Willie Brown Middle School

“This school is a real treasure. There is a great combination of strong academics, enthusiastic teachers, and project-based learning that really engages the students. The emphasis on STEM–including Robotics and Computer science–is really impressive, and the students love it. It is also a small school, with small classes, and the student get to know each other and the teachers. There are also a lot of arts electives, and the facility is amazing, including the Maker space, the science classrooms, the Hub (huge outdoor courtyard), and the library. As a family, we have been welcomed into Willie Brown, and our student has been strongly supported.”

“While distance learning isn’t anyone’s first choice for how to spend the first year of middle school, our daughter has had a great experience with very engaged teachers and administrators. They’ve supported her in each subject and found creative and effective ways to deliver the learning content digitally. We can’t wait for school to be safely back in person so we can participate even more actively in this wonderful community.”

“I’m a parent, and my child has been at this school for more than a year now. I’m extremely happy with the school, and my daughter is thriving there. She especially loves the Robotics program. We were at Glen Park School before. I visited the school because another parent visited it and encouraged me to go. I didn’t expect much from it because of what I read about it before, or its location in the Bayview (in all honesty), but I was very pleasantly surprised by the campus, the teachers, and a number of students (I got to drop in unexpectedly in various classes and all kids were engaged, which was very different than what I had seen in other middle schools) and I really appreciated the approach and professionalism of the principal, Mr. Brown. The school and the teachers are going above and beyond to do all they can and a great job with distance learning. I believe this school took a very different turn 2-3 years ago with Mr. Brown’s arrival. I encourage parents to visit and contact parents who have kids currently attending this school to make their own opinion and see what this school has to offer!”

Caroline C., seventh grade parent, 2020-2021 school year

“We sent our son to WBMS for the last three years. He loved it so much that we are sending our daughter now. The teachers are amazing. My son became very interested in Robotics. Mr. Robertson was so devoted to these kids. He would let them stay after school to work on their projects. They were given so much freedom to develop their robots and try something new. They learned more by trial and error. He taught them not to be afraid to fail because this is where they grew the most. He was involved in the Science club and competed in the Science Olympiad. He played baseball, ran track, and started training with the wrestling team before school was shut down. What we loved as parents was seeing Mr. Brown, the principal, every morning saying good morning and giving high fives to the kids as they get to school. He has so much energy and is always trying to find ways to bring the community togetherness and support all the families. Now that my daughter is at WBMS, she is interested in their arts and the music program. This year with distance learning, the teachers have adapted well, giving her plenty of incentives to do her work and learn the material. She loves her teachers and advisor and is looking forward to discovering more of the VAPA wheel offered at WBMS. Right now, she is taking music and will move into art and then health. She’s very happy at WBMS and is excited to become involved in baseball and clubs in the future!”

“After our son toured seven middle schools, he put Willie Brown at the top of his list. He has not been disappointed. The school community is warm, welcoming, and he has gotten the academic support he needs.”
